Plumcot

Plumcot

A plumcot is a natural hybrid of plum and apricot (approximately 50% of each), producing small to medium-sized fruit with reddish-purple skin and sweet, vibrant flesh. The tree is vigorous, deciduous, and relatively low-maintenance, typically reaching around 3–4 metres in height, making it well suited to backyard gardens or container growing.

Key Characteristics:

  • Fruit: Combines the sweetness of apricot with the texture and characteristics of plum. The skin is usually smooth (less fuzzy than apricots), with juicy flesh ranging from red to yellow.
  • Tree Size: Commonly grows to about 3–4 metres but can be pruned to stay smaller or trained for container culture.
  • Growing Conditions: Performs best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil.
  • Harvest & Maintenance: Typically harvested in late spring to early summer (around November–January depending on climate). Often shows improved disease resistance compared to some plum varieties, including bacterial spot.
  • Pollination: Some varieties are partially self-fertile, but planting near a Japanese plum can improve yield and consistency.
